Essay topics:

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using Facebook as a means of online instruction. You may compare with other tools like zoom etc. Relevant examples of your own experience can be included.

Social Networking Sites such as Facebook, Zalo, Instagram are widely used by student communities and are increasingly used by the community generally. By the national self-isolation order of education institutions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Social Networking Site, especially Facebook has been a tool that enhances and supports e-learning through creating group discussions, classroom notification or homework submission. However, to consider Facebook as an appropriate, efficient learning platform, we have to observe both its advantages and disadvantages.

The popularity of using Facebook is the very first advantage. Because most people know how to use Facebook, they don’t need to become familiar with a new platform on an untested and unprecedented scale. Secondly, its benefits were identified through the communicative potential. With creating a discussion group, a lecturer can interact with other students, give homework, inform the latest news to them and they can easily respond and submit their homework by post or comment sharings even when they cannot join the class on time. Facebook is not only a fast, convenient platform for online study, but it is also free to access. Anyone with a valid email address or just a phone number can easily sign up in minutes with some personal information. Meanwhile, comparing with other tools like Zoom, a platform is now unlimited all features just for American and European users due to COVID-19, so a Vietnamese host has to pay approximately 300.000 - 500.000 VNĐ to have unlimited meeting time and up to 500 participants.

On the other hand, Facebook, however, is a platform that can easily make them distract from studying. In general, students don't use Facebook just only for an educational setting, many are using it to communicate with their family, their peers or update the latest news on over the world. They may miss some lecturer's notifications while being engrossed with surfing the Facebook timeline. Another drawback of using Facebook as an online learning platform is that lecturers cannot have a face-to-face meeting with a huge amount of participants on a stable internet speed while the main purpose of Zoom platform is to create a virtual meeting which also easily manage the participants' attendance and others tools like sharing the screen for presentation. Finally, not all of them will want to share their personal information with their classmates and lecturer. The fact that it is not possible with Facebook increasing a bigger issue: users should be concerned with how secure the service is, where the data sits, who owns the content, and how it is being used.

To sum up, using Facebook as a learning platform can provide the students with one another impressive levels of support and encourage the lockdown order to prevent COVID-19 from being uncontrollable. However, users have to think twice about its disadvantages to have a more efficient learning platform.
