How to solve the problems with ecotourism in your country?
From my point of view, ecotourism is a form of tourism where tourists visit fragile, pristine, and relatively undisturbed natural areas. Its purpose may be to educate the traveller, to provide funds for ecological conservation, to directly benefit the economic development, or to foster respect for different cultures and for human rights.
Ecotourism has so far brought great benefits to the economy, become a spearhead economic contribution, but there are some downsides caused by ecotourism growth. One of the most common criticisms is water pollution which was caused by solid waste and littering. Tourists are freely disposed of garbage such as plastic bags or drinking bottles at the touristic sites, which posed a threat to the natural environment. Obviously, such improper actions result in marine animal death due to loss of water purity. Another drawback of tourism is the disappearance of traditional cultural values. Take craft products, for example, local artisans tend to modify their traditional designs to meet customer’s taste. This may lead to cultural erosion. Another angle in the picture of ecotourism is the lack of knowledge about ecotourism that wasted potential tourism. Fortunately, some measures could be taken to tackle such problems.
To go into details, firstly, we should improve knowledge about ecotourism. Ecotourists should undergo compulsory training at colleges or universities. Staff, especially managers should be equipped with professional skills and basic knowledge of ecotourist practices. Also, tourists need to raise their awareness and get them involved in conservation work. Research by Associate Professor Ph.D Pham Trung Luong shows that 90 percent of ecotourist guides lack evironmental knowledge caused potential waste. For instance, Ha Long Bay – a world heritage site with immense environmental values, but tourists in there are presently visiting the Bay and some caves, not accessing useful information or local cultural activities.
Secondly, we should enhance environmental protection with sustainable development. Much tourism is still spontaneous, and lacking in management and visitor regulations. Some tourists are not fully aware of environmental protection and reluctant to pay conservation fees. If they throw rubbish or cut tree branches, they are not fined. To stop this, government must pass severe laws, which ban cutting plants or throwing rubbish, and fine heavily those who break the laws.
Finally, it is necessary to preserve local tradition. Local people are not much involved in ecotourism, and most tourist guides have poor knowledge of the indigenous culture. Therefore, ecotourists get no exposure to Vietnam’s diverse cultural identities. This is a limitation that must be overcome. Besides, to prevent cultural erosion, we can call support from developent organizations working on culture preservation to establish fixed modification framework to prevent cultural erosion. For instance, craft products should be required to keep the key techniques or certain features of their own culture.
