rtists create art with purpose. What do you think this artist’s purpose was in creating this work? Why do you think this? What clues can be found in the artwork and the title that lead you to this conclusion? Are there other themes that are addressed within the art? What are they? How do you know? (Note: “to make money” is certainly one reason why art is created, but you must be able to support this with facts. Try thinking outside the box on this question.) Address the potential meanings of the artwork. Look at the time-period and the history of the artist. Their background often influences their style and perspectives. What personal meaning do you find in the work you have chosen? What do you feel are its universal messages? Include the background and history of the artist and make connections to style, messages, and themes. You will include a biography of the artist and make connections to the art work they created.

Using terms from class, discuss the media (material the art is made from), i.e. oil paint on canvas, carved stone, etc. Then discuss the technique (the way the material is constructed, applied etc.) How does the media and/or technique influence and/or enhance the meaning? If it not a traditional media or process, do you think the new technology or material is superior to traditional media? Why? Use any vocabulary from the class to discuss your art in detail. You must incorporate the vocabulary of the principles and elements of art pertaining to your piece. You must choose a minimum of THREE elements/principles of art and discuss how the artist utilizes them in this image. This section should be at least two fully developed paragraphs.

3. Is this an artwork of value (not necessarily monetary value, but cultural value)? What is the value of this art in today’s society? Does its meaning change over time? Do you feel the message the artwork conveys will be relevant in the future (or not, if you feel it will not)? Do you feel art is worth risking your life for? Would you do the same? Why or why not? Relate these questions to the piece of art you have chosen to write about.

4. Comment on your emotional response, aesthetic reaction, why you liked the piece, and why you think it’s important. Did it make you think or see things differently? Does it have a strong message? DO NOT make this paper about only your opinions. You must do real work and research. Your opinions come at the end, after you have done all of the formal and contextual research and analysis. No one cares about uninformed opinions - make sure you have done the research and use critical thinking skills to make connections.

Analysis paper about I HAVE NO MOUTH, AND I MUST SCREAM

For this century, our society has been evolving about Artificial Intelligence and Computer technology. Some people are afraid of Artificial Intelligence technology because AI will be dominate Mankind. When 20th, it was just a concern. But we are facing Artificial Intelligence problem. For example, Harlan states that “AI technology will make people to lose a job” and “AI will be dominate our mankind”(Ellison, 97) Author, Harlan Jay Ellison is famous about technical tragic future story so I decided this article. In this respect, I Have No MOUTH, AND I MUST SCREAM, this story is describing terrible future. Artificial Intelligence rule in the future and people are become extinct by AI. Throughout the story, Author depicted terrible our future dominated from AI.

To start with, this short story start Ted's first-person narrative and he continues to scream. Charters try to escape from AM (Alied Mastercomputerand)made to be cruel 5 people. They believe we can escape from AM. But Alied Mastercomputer killed every Mankind to except Limp, Nimdok, Gorrister, Ellen, Benny, Ted. Five survivors try to escape from AM’s restricted computer world. This novel is a monologue of Ted. Every character was transformed by AM also they always painful. Gorrister: Limp described the body of Gorrister hung from the pink palette and he look like voodoo icon. Ellen did not move but his voice came out of his covered face quite clearly and AM made her look like prostitute. Nimdok, it is not his real name but the machine had forced him to use. Because it amused for Am and it made funny sound. Benny was a handsome and smart scholar but AM made him semi-human and semi-simian. Ted, he argues I am a normal person. Unfortunately, he was brainwashed by AM.

Furthermore, in the article, Benny asked “What does AM mean” by another four guys, which can be guess brainwash. Gorrister answered Benny “At first it meant Allied Mastercomputer, and then it meant Adaptive Manipu-lator, and later on it developed sentience and linked itself up and they called it an Aggressive Menace, but by then it was too late, and finally it called itself AM, emerging intelligence, and what it meant was I am. . . cogito ergo sum . . . I think, therefore I am.”(Ellison, 103). At this point, we can be figure out that AM was originally to deal with emergency situation. However, AM changed himself.

Second, Ellison also states that “The Cold War started and became World War Three and Just kept going. It became a big war, a very complex war, so they needed the computers to handle it. They sank the first shafts and began building AM. There was the Chinese AM and the Russian AM and the Yankee AM and everything was fine until they had honeycombed the entire planet, adding on this element and that element, But one day AM woke up and knew who he was, and he linked himself, and he began feeding all the killing data, until everyone was dead, except for the five of us, and AM brought us down here.” (Ellison, 103) You can see that it's a collection of artificial intelligence. We can know that AM is not just an artificial intelligence object. They shell to forget their memory. Characters were developing team about AM. Also, in the short story, Ted said “Oh, Jesus sweet Jesus, if there ever was a Jesus and if there is a God, please please please let us out of here, or kill us.” (Ellison, 106) Ted preyed god for his salvation. However, he noticed AM controlling them like god.

Moreover, According to the Ellison biography, Ellison said “ The “ Harlequin” won both the Hugo and the Nebula that year as best short story of 1965. I returned in 1966 to throw it in Damon’s face. (They never knew it, but I actually had the Hugo statuette with me, in my room at the Tom Quick. I needed it to rejuve-nate my self-esteem.) The story I submitted that year was “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.” (Ellison, 97) We can know how this story was created by author. Also, following some facts about Harlan Ellison, “Harlan Ellison is small, muscular and easily upset”. (Ellison,98) It describe author was a sensitive personality.

Another respect, in this short story, author is using the baudot code. It is the important symbol for reader to understand character’s situation. When readers can look many dots, which very impressive because readers always think what is the dots mean? This code would be lead readers attention. This is good device for readers to be concentrate on short story. In the article, “HATE LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I’VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUIT IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLION MILES IR WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE. (Ellison, 108) This paragraph, AM describe his rage for Mankind and characters. Also, readers can be notice AM hate not only mankind but also himself. Because AM mentioned “my complex”, which means that AM have a serious problem. This is because he has a self-inferiority complex.

Third, in the end of article, when AM doesn't intervene, Ted kills Gorister and Benny with icicles to free him from his life as an AM toy, and Ellen also kills Nimdok, who knows the smell. When Ted belatedly noticed this after killing Ellen, AM made Ted into a jelly mass with no arms and legs, preventing him from committing suicide and distorting his sense of time. As the only survivor with no one left to kill him, Ted says he's lucky the others have found him safe ( Ellison,114) Through last sentence, the story done just remain one sentence “I have no mouth, And I must Scream.” (Ellison,115)

In conclusion, this short story has been describing future of destructive. Every Mankind became extinct. 5 people are always suffering by AM. Probably, this short story is always describing our terrible future. Artificial intelligence is the double edge sword. AI technology need to be considering because we are facing developed AI system.
