A Teen's Worst Fear
What scares you the most? Is it spiders, pain, or even death? Most teenagers fear isolation. Teens want to be supported. They want to be in a group, never left vulnerable and alone. Isolation affects a teen in terrible ways. Many teens gain a lowered self-confidence and self-perception due to isolation. Isolated teens may also develop severe mental health problems. Ultimately, isolated teens may develop a fear of speech. They are unable or even unwilling to speak up for themselves. Isolation can impact a teen's life in many negative ways, which is why it is a teen's worst fear.
For many teens, isolation leads to a lowered self-esteem. In the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the reader can see that isolation impacts the main character, Melinda. Throughout the book, Melinda has an incredibly low self-esteem and self-confidence. She sees herself as a person with "Two muddy-circle eyes under black-dash eyebrows, piggy-nose nostrils and a chewed-up horror of a mouth" (Anderson 17). In this passage, the readers can see that Melinda feels degraded because she has no friends. She isolates herself for such an extensive time and that she eventually does not feel beautiful. She just wants to be left alone. Teens may also isolate themselves because of their body image. "For some, the desire to look as perfect as these models can become all-consuming, and a wealth of evidence suggests that people in the UK are experiencing serious body image problems" (Swinson). This implies that teens without friends may isolate themselves more because they loathe their bodies.. “According to Anorexia Nervosa & Related Eating Disorders, Inc., one out of every four female college students engages in unhealthy means of controlling their weight” (Vaux). If teens focus so much on their body by dieting, going to the gym, and losing weight, when will they have time to interact with their friends? They unknowingly isolate themselves from their friends and family. If teens dislike their bodies, they want to be invisible so they will not be bullied. If people stop talking and refuse to include teens in groups because of their body, they may also isolate themselves. Although isolation can cause an unhealthy self-perception, it also affects a teen's mental well being.
Many teens suffer from poor mental health issues. Approximately twenty percent of teens have a mental illness, and isolation plays a substantial role in this (Celebre). Teens who isolate themselves may plunge into depression, and this may lead to a severe mental health issue. In the text Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer, the main characters suffer from severe isolation. They explain how they are "trapped in their own Bell Jar" (Wolitzer 49). A bell jar is a place in which a person is severed from the outside world. The characters all feel very isolated and depressed. All they can think about is the trauma they are going through. The isolation they confront is so difficult, they feel trapped and alone. Teens who isolate themselves may sink into depression, and this may lead to a severe mental health issue. The characters in Belzar also explain how they are "floating farther and farther away from everyone" (Wolitzer 49). The characters feel that isolation will help them alleviate their trauma. This way, they can be with their own thoughts. Additionally, teens may also develop a fear of speaking as they isolate themselves.
We have a time when we do not want to talk, but isolated teens have it worse. In the text Speak, Melinda is afraid to open up about the trauma she was facing. Every time Melinda tries speaking to her parents or a teacher, she "sputters or freezes" (Anderson 24). This passage expresses that Melinda tries to speak, but she cannot. She is too frightened, it is almost as if she does not know how to speak anymore. “It's easier not to say anything. Shut your trap, button your lip, can it. All that crap you hear on TV about communication and expressing feelings is a lie. Nobody really wants to hear what you have to say” (Anderson 9). This quote explains how Melinda feels when she talks and many isolated teens feel the same way. They feel so unwanted that they do not speak because people do not want to listen to them. Teens also isolate themselves because they feel that their opinion is not valued. This happened in the book Belzhar as well. The main character cannot tell her peers what trauma she is experiencing. She does not have the heart to explain how her boyfriend died because she isolated herself for an extensive time, she does not know how to communicate. Teens who isolate themselves are not able to speak even when they want to, they become socially awkward. They simply cannot and will not speak out. They feel that they have no voice. Consequently, isolation affects so many parts of a teen's life, hence, the reason many teens fear it.
Isolation is frightening for many teens. Isolation contributes to a lowered self-perception for many teens. This can even result in serious mental illnesses. Moreover, many isolated teens may be unable to speak up for themselves. Teens fear isolation because it manipulates them in several unfavorable ways. Many teens need a hand to support them. If you ever see an isolated teenager, give them that helping hand, they need it more than you expect.
