Your class has attended a panel discussion on the problem of long term unemployment among people over 50 and possible solutions to the problem. You have made the notes below:
Ways of dealing with the problem:
- Retraining
- Early retirement
- Job sharing
Write an essay for your tutor discussing two the ideas in your notes. You should explain which way of dealing with the problem you think would be more effective, giving reasons to support your opinion.
An unemployment rate is one of the most significant economic indicators. Alongside inflation, gross domestic products and stock market prices for instance, it provides information about economic state of a particular country. In periods of recession, this rate is higher as both state and private companies often have no other chance but to make some of their employees redundant. Statistics show that the two age groups affected most are youth and people over fifty. The latter ones are those we focus on in this essay, with an aim to suggest a solution to help.
Firstly, let us give some thought to why older people are thought to be the least needed. In my opinion, they are all every employer secretly dreams of: experienced, professional, emotionally balanced, thoughtful, generally settled down - aware of what they want and thus less likely to fluctuate. Not to mention the practical benefits such as no parental or child-sick leave to come.
On the other hand, they are (often falsely) said to expose less flexibility as well as less willingness to accept new ideas and learn new things, especially when it comes to technology. However erroneous this conception might be, I am afraid that this is the reason why these people often face long-term unemployment.
Given these points, I strongly believe that the way out is not an early retirement. Not only would it just boost feelings of nothingness, but also do I doubt there exist funds in state budget to cover such costs. On the contrary, I would recommend all those people to do their best to beautify their CV. Do some retraining courses, keep yourself updated with the latest technology, learn a new language, master your driving skills, go for an accountancy (type-writing, sign language, dog-handling, photography, communication…) courses – all counts. Make use of the time you were, even unfairly, given, as there are days to come when you may be sadly missing it.
