Nowadays, there are different methods in order to encourage students to learn their course materials. In this regard, some people believe that grades encourage students to learn, while others hold the opposite supposition, stating that marks cannot motivate pupils to learn. When it comes to me, I concur with the latter group. In what follows, I will elaborate on my viewpoint with two specific reasons.
First of all, students may cheat in order to get good marks, which does not show any encouragement toward learning. To be more specific, when schools' policies are based on grades, and students are ranked by their marks, cheating comes through. In such conditions, students try every method in order to get good marks, and one of the easiest ways is cheating. As a result, the system of grading does not work well and cannot encourage students to learn. For instance, my brother's school changed its rules two years ago and paid much attention to students' grades to encourage them to learn lessons better. My brother always had some cheat sheets in his pocket during exams to get good marks, and I think the school’s policy failed because the grade is not a good motivation for students to study.
Secondly, students may be forced to achieve high grades by their parents, which does not cause students to motivate about learning. To elucidate, when students' academic performances are judged by their grades, parents increase their efforts to force their children to get high marks. Therefore, students feel strong pressure to study hard and achieve high marks. These pressures may cause students to stop their urge to learn. Accordingly, grades cannot encourage students to learn their lessons. For example, my sister decided to stop her education in her last year of high school, and the only reason was my father's pressure for getting high marks. Had my father paid less attention to her grades, she would have finished her education.
In conclusion, with all this taken into account, I firmly believe that grades cannot encourage students to learn. Not only, may students cheat to get high grades, but also they may be forced to achieve good marks by their parents, which is not effective for students to learn their courses.
