Good teachers set challenging tasks for their students.
I agree that good teachers set challenging tasks for their students. Clearly there are some other important qualities a good teacher must have, but I think challenging students with assignments is one of the most important qualities what a teacher must have if he or she wants to prepare their students for the future.
First of all, good teachers are the ones who teach important lessons to children which are remembered the whole life. This occurs only if the students leave their comfort zone and gain new skills in order to solve the task. For example, I learned most of the Turkish history from a teacher who I did not like much because of the difficult homework he gave us every week. After more than 10 years, exactly the homework topics from him are the ones which I can remember well. Apparently the challenging tasks make students gain new skills and knowledge which is sustained for a long time.
Second, good teachers do not just talk in front of the class as in a monologue. A good lecturer manages to bring the students to talk and discuss the material with only little supervision. This might be sometimes challenging for some students, but it is in any case better than a dry monologue which usually bores the students.
Third, good teachers bring up young adults who can stand on their feet, who have the self-confidence to take important roles in the society. This is partly done with the help of challenging tasks. By solving challenging tasks, students not only gain knowledge which is remembered for a long time, but also gain self-confidence by being able to solve a non-trivial problem. That is why, it is important for the maturing of students, that they don't get all the knowledge served on a silver platter, but struggle and fight to solve challenging tasks.
In summary, good teachers set challenging tasks for their students, not only because the knowledge gained from those tasks remain for a longer time, but also because the confidence gained from solving such assignments plays a crucial role in the mature life of the children.
