In both the passage and lecture, it has been discussed what is the benefits and disadvantages of four days a week work for employees. The passage sheds lights on the good side of four days a week working and the lecture discusses the disadvantages and risks.
In the passage as it has been said that workers will even prefer 80 percent rate of their normal salary if they are allowed to work four days a week. Companies can hire new employees to balance out the work load. As they have to pay the existing employees 20 precent less and they can give the new employees this as salary. In this way, the economical growth of the company will not be affected. But the lecture points out that the training process of the new employees will cost extra. On top of that, extra medical benefits will be needed for the new employees as medical benefit is same for all. And extra employees will require more arrangments in the office space and also extra office accessories like- computer, chair, table etc.
In the passage it explains that four days a week of work will be very beneficial as the employees will feel more relaxed due to the 3 days leave in a week and will become more careful about work which will reflect positively on their work assignments. But in the lecture it is said that the companies may start having their employees work overtime, and also there will be a rise in expectation that 5 days of work will be done in four days. So this may affect the employees negatively.
From the passage we get to realize that there will be a reduction in employment rate if companies start having 4 days a week work. But from the lecture we get to know that in this way no additional extra job will be created and this will effect the job market negatively.
And also the passage says that four days a week will make the employees' life more enjoyable and it will led them to have a great family life and also a good, fresh mind. But the lecture explains how this can make the current job unpleasant for them and they might not be able to lead the extravagant life they lead as payroll will be low. It might also affect the stability of the job which will affect their career negatively. And companies might prefer a 5 days a week worker over them. In ecomical crisis these employees might lose thier job as well.
As we can see, this four days a week job has some positive and negative sides. and bothe the passage and the lecture reflects on them.
