Evolution in Action
When an environment undergoes a dramatic change and no longer provides the conditions necessary for a species to survive, this species must change or face extinction. It has long been held that this change, referred to as evolution, needed hundreds of years to take place. Scientists have now found that evolution occurs quickly within some organisms as they adapt and develop in response to environments that have undergone a quick and extreme change. This rapid change is called evolution in action. As researchers investigate dramatically changing environments, they are discovering more and more examples of this.
