Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement

Essay topics:

Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Controversies raise regarding whether the government should invest money on rail systems instead of roads. Factually, either rail networks and streets are important, as both support the development of one country’s economics, so I completely disagree with the idea above.
On the one hand, rail networks can be an effective delivery system while also be an essential transport for long distance travel in many countries. For example, in Vietnam, trains are used to carried both goods and passengers from the North to the South of the country and reverse. It is believed to have an affordable cost and can transfer more people and cargoes than other transportation such as truck or plane. Besides, in terms of long distances travel and shipping, the railways are safer and faster compared to the road systems, as there are neither traffic jam nor other vehicles on the track, which means the accident ratio is respectively low, and the shipping delay will likely not happen. Due to its effectiveness in cargo shipping and travelling over long distance, it is necessary for authorities to distribute resources on rail networks in order to ensure the smooth transportation, thus, contributing to the economy.
On the other hand, for daily commute, most citizen will prefer the roads. It is not hard to see people go to work or to school using different mode of transport, such as cars, bikes or bus. In fact, some governments even encourage their citizens to utilize public vehicles like bus or environmental-friendly one like bikes for commuting, as they aim to reduce the number of vehicles on the road, thus avoiding traffic jam. However, the most effective strategy at some countries, including Vietnam is to allocate funds for road upgrading. This involves broaden, periodically maintenance and repair the road. Therefore, spending money on road is also required to maximize inhabitant daily commute, which directly affect the overall movement of the society and the economy.
To summarize, I fully disagree with the given idea, as from my perspective, both roads and railways play critical roles in our lives and the national economic development. Therefore, governments should allocate money evenly to both systems to maintain their effective instead of priority one over another.
