Both reading and lecture discuss the salvage logging. According to the reading, The author asserts that this method is beneficial for forest and economy and provides three competing reasons, which all are rejected by the lecturer. The lecture illustrates the idea that salvage logging may appear helpful buy in the actual term it would not be a long-term impact and is questionable; moreover, the professor cites three reasons to reject the points in the reading.
First of all, the reading passage asserts that salvage logging, which removes the dead tree, causes that new trees have a space for growing because no trees would grow on the cramped sites. The professor, on the contrary, casts doubt on this claim by saying that cleaning the site by salvage logging does not necessarily provide a right condition. The decomposed dead tree cause to rich soil and improve the richness of the soil. Therefore, The dead trees are very crucial for the soils which lack nutrients component.
Secondly, the article claims that rooting wood is a proper place for insects which can damage the forest. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this claims and points out that even though the dead tree increase the insect and provide a habitat for insects, but insects are not bad for the forests because insects live in the forest more than 100 years and do not damage the forests. In addition, the decaying wood is a place for birds which contribute to the forest in a long-term and are important for the forests.
Finally, according to the reading passage, the author says that not only has to salvage logging economic advantages, but also provide an opportunity to create jobs for local people. The speaker, however, denies the points of the author and asserts that the economic benefits of salvage logging are very small an would not last for a long time. Additionally, the salvage logging does only by helicopter which costs a great deal of money and is very expensive. In terms of creating a job for local residents, Moreover, the professor says that the jobs which are being created by salvage logging is temporary, and the people who can carry out logging is outsiders and experienced people other than local people.
