TPO-14 - Integrated Writing Task
Every year, forest fires and severe stormscause a great deal of damage to forests in the northwestern United States. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice of removing dead trees from affected areas and using the wood for lumber, plywood,and other wood products. There are several reasons why salvage logging is beneficial both to a damaged forest and to the economy.
First, after a devastating fire, forests are choked with dead trees. If the trees are not removed, they will take years to decompose; in the meantime, no new trees can grow in the cramped spaces. Salvage logging, however, removes the remains of dead trees and makes room for fresh growth immediately, which i s likely to help forest areas recover from the disaster. Also, dead trees do more than the take up space. Decaying wood is a highly suitable habitat for insects such as the spruce bark beetle, which in large numbers can damage live, healthy spruce trees. So by removing rotting wood, salvage logging helps minimize the dangers of insect infestation, thus contributing to the health of the forest.
Third and last, salvage logging has economic benefits. Many industries depend upon the forests for their production, and because of this discusses a fire can have a very harmful effect on the economy. Often, however, the trees that have been damaged by natural disasters still can provide much wood that is usable by industries. Furthermore, salvage logging requires more workers than traditional logging operations do, and so it helps create additional jobs for local residents.
The reading passage and the lectures both discuss merits and demerits of salvage logging, which is a practice of remove dead trees after forest fires. In the reading part, the author mentions that it has enormous advantage such as economic benefits, increasing the number if trees and reducing damage of trees itself. In the listening part, however, the speaker challenges what the author states and refutes the reasons.
To begin with, as mentioned in the article, the writer sets forth that salvage logging contributed to fresh and live trees to grow and makes new habitat for fresh trees; nevertheless, the professor rebuts the reasons asserting that it may apparently makes healthy room for new and fresh trees, but it has long term effects and makes much more damages. Indeed, it will ruin the perfect condition for new trees with rapid removal and it causes lack of nutrient for soil, in which is the main habitat for growing trees.
Secondly, the author points out that this makes suitable place for living and growing insects, swarms and harmful animals, hence they should be remove for more beneficial concepts. Nonetheless, the speaker flatly contradicts the reasons and contends that not only are dead trees placed for insects, but also it is a great place for other specious such as birds, therefore should they fired the forests, it would provide more harmful influences in the other specious habitat.
Finally, the author claims that salvage logging possesses economic advantages for people who lived there, in addition it provides additional job for them; however, the professor is of the opinion that economical effect did not last long effects for individuals. it needs helicopter, which is most costly and expensive and local residents cannot afford that. Moreover, it does not make additional job for the residents, resulting to destructive economic factors for them.
