Modern computerized voting system Vs traditional voting system ETS sample questions
The lecturer explained why computerized voting system should not replace traditional voting system. He provided following three reasons for his opinion.
First of all, everyone is not familiar with the use of computer. Some people have never even touched computer before, so it is very difficult for them to cast their vote with the help of computer. The fear of technology may cause them to cast wrong vote. So it is not a better option for such kind of people. This directly refutes the reading passage claim that people can vote easily by just a touch of finger.
Secondly, computers can also make mistakes, after all they are programmed by humans. There is always possibility of error in computer based voting system. Furthermore, a big risk in this kind of voting system is that there will be no physical record, so it is almost impossible to retain or recount the votes if any error happens. This undermines the reading passage claim that computers can not make mistakes in counting.
Finally, it is not a good option to fully rely on such technology for the important event of voting. Voting happens only once or some times more than twice and if the technology failed the whole voting event will be a failure. Therefore, It will always be a smart choice to choose a fully trusted method in the important event of voting. Moreover, in banking system technology is being used in daily basis and it is not a once a year use so relying on technology makes sense to them. Again it contradicts what is stated in the reading that it will work for voting system in the same way as it works for banking system.
All in all, everyone is not familiar with the use of technology, computers can also make errors and computer voting system is not fully reliable to use. These are the main reasons so that traditional voting system should not be replaced by computer based voting system.
