The reading passage explores the issues of extinction of more than half all living species, and several reasons are offered in support of this argument. However, the lecturer casts doubt on it and contradicts it for the following reasons.
First of all, even though the reading passage suggests that the decline of sea levels, the lecturer argues that even sea levels fall, the species can adapt the environment to survive. This is because sea level causes the negative result after a million years, which means the Egosystem are still fine when sea level falls. Obviously, the lecturer's argument disproves its counterpart in the reading.
Secondly, the statement held by the writer claims that widespread volcanic activity. Nonetheless, it is argued in the listening that SO2 in the atmosphere cause lower temperature in the short period. The lecturer gives the truth that SO2 is cleared out when it dissolve into water and make a rainfall.
Last but not least, the lecturer acutely identifies the weakness in the reading passage that asteroid hits Earth's surface. The lecturer convincingly points out that crater is found in Earth's surface; moreover, in order to establish a solid and concrete statement, she offers the example that the extinction of species in not mainly cause by asteroid, because when asteroid happened the extinction is already happened.
In conclusion, based on the argument presented above, it can be clearly seen that the stances on the both sides are paradoxical. Although the contents in the reading passage seem to be plausible, further scrutiny leads the lecturer to believe the point of view in the reading passage are not correct.
