The table illustrates the proportion of consumer expenditure on three groups of goods in five distinct countries in 2002.
As can be seen from the tables, by far, spending on food, drinks and tobacco accounted for particular large proportion of the total expenditure for all countries. Turkey, Ireland, for example, spent nearly the third of money for these items, at 32.14% and 28.91% respectively. Expenditure of these goods in Italy, Spain and Sweden also made up the significant percentage which was all well over 15%.( 16.36%, 18.80% and 15.77% each)
For clothing and footwear, the expenditure equally constituted the smaller percentage (approximately 6%) compared with food, drinks and tobacco, with the exception of Italy having dominant percentage (9.00%).
Money spent on leisure and education was also noticeable, ranged from a low of 1.98% for Spain to a high of 4.35% for Turkey.
