The lecture and the reading passage discuss on the new policy of an international organization related to Ecological Sustainable Forestry Practices. The reading passage contrasts the influences the policy on American communities by three reasons and the lecture rejects those reasons on the text. An international organization is offering a certification for all wood companies and all these companies are required to obtain the certification that shows their products built by them are based on the supportive standards of the environment.
First, reading passage explains that American companies won’t obtain the certification because they think American people don’t trust and pay attention to the standard labels and claims on the products. However, the lecture describes that American consumers can distinguish this kind of certification and make it different from other advertisements. In addition, American consumers with ecological minds have more confidence on independent consumer agencies. Therefore, consumer will support the wood products with that certification.
Second, it is mentioned in the reading passage that the wood companies will not obtain the certification because they should pay more money on earning that certification, so consumers will buy their products because of being expensive. On the other hand, the lecture explains that consumer comparing the prices between two goods, choose the cheaper one. But, if the difference of price between two products is small, less than 5 percent, consumers will choose the products with the certification because they consider other factors rather than the price, which are more valuable like environmental supports.
Finally, the reading passage mentions that earning the certification is not too necessary for the companies those are marketing inside of the country rather than abroad, and so the native consumers are more important for them. In contrast, the lecture discusses that American companies should pay attention to international business not for foreign consumers, also for the foreign competition and it is a good chance of companies to supply equal products. In addition, if they do not notice to the certification, the foreign companies will crowded in the American companies offering the certification.
