The reading and the speaker discuss the effects of Little Ice Age from discrepant perspectives. The author of the reading gives three ideas to support his idea about how Little Ice Age occurred. However, the speaker casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He says that all reasons, which the article has mentioned are old-fashion. None of those notions are convincing.
First of all, the author of the reading points out that disrupting of ocean currents caused the Little Ice Age. It is noted that before the Little Ice Age the weather was warmer, and it melted glacier in the Gulf Stream. This point is challenged by the speaker. He restates the fact that the Gulf Stream was only in Europe and North America. Meanwhile the cooling weather affected strongly I the Southern areas. Therefore, the idea that the article has mentioned is incorrect.
Secondly, the author of the reading contends that volcanic eruption could have caused the Little Ice Age, because it sent dark clouds and dusts as well as sulfur into the air and blocked the sunlight. The speaker rebuts this argument by saying that volcanic eruption also provided visual effect. It provided a colorful sunset. Moreover, the snows at that time had gray and dark color. Therefore, they were not strong enough to cool the earth.
Finally, the author of the reading states that the decrease of rate of human populations caused cooling weather, since they did not burn fuels or use forest much. The speaker, on the other hand, oppose this point by saying that actually, human population increase significantly in a short time. They quickly planted and cut them down trees to use. Therefore, this phenomenon cannot fit the reason that the author of the reading has cited.
