The article and lecture debate over accuracy and reliability of Chevalier's memoir. The reading states that Chevalier could have twisted the truth in order to show his life was more adventourous and colorful than it really was and provides three reasons of support. However, professor the opposes the claims made in article by providing contrastig openion for each of the reasons.
First, article posits that Chevalier was not rich as he explainedwhile he was living in switzerland. Infact, he borrowd money from a merchant. However, professor refutes this judgement by saying that borrowing money doesn't mean that person is poor. She states that, when he was in Swisstzerland he spent money for partying and gambling. In order to spend money, he sold his assets and wealth. He ran out of cash while waiting for arrival of money from his sold properties. That is why he took loan from Swiss merchant. This evidence proves that he wasn't necessarily poor when he was in Switzerland.
Second, reading casts doubts upon the accuracy of conversation Chevalier had with Voltaire. However, the professor refutes this claim. According to professor, Chevalier wrote down his conversation with Voltaire each night after their dinning. He kept the conversastion he had written for many years. Later, when he wrote about conversation in memoir, he referred it from notebook.
Third, article states that Chevalier bribed people in prison in oredr to escape and tweaked the truth while writing the memoir. The professor opposes this point by saying that prison had more powerful people than Chevalier and they couldn't ecape by bribing. Moreover, the best evidence from one of the government documents states that sealing of Chevalier's room had to be repaired after his escape. This proves that he actually used the methods he stated in his reading in order to escape from prison. Otherwise, there was no need of sealing repair.
Thus, professor refutes each of the claims made in article and she considers Chevalier's memoir as an accurate and reliable historical source.
