The reading passage and listening are discussing two contradictory theories about declining of the population of sea otters in Alaskan coast. The reading passage says that the environmental pollution is the reason of the population decrease in sea otters. However, the lecturer casts doubt on reading passage by providing reasons that they show the predators are the reason of declining.
First of all, the reading passage says that the increasing chemicals in the water have decreased the amount of sea otters. However, the lecturer says that the predatory theory supports the decline of sea otters. As predators kill sea otters and eat them immediately, so there isn't any dead sea otters on the beach of Alaskan.
On the other hand, the reading passage claims that the other sea mammals such as seals and sea lines in the Alaskan coast also have decreased because of environmental pollution. However, the lecturer casts doubt on that view of reading passage by mentioning that the orcas are eating other mammals because of lack of whales in the Alaskan coast.
Finally, the reading passage says that uneven pattern shows that in the Alaskan coast the population of sea otters have decreased, while in other locations their population are stable. The lecturer believes that the uneven pattern supports predatory theory more than environmental pollution theory. He says that the orcas are large creatures that they don't have access to other shallow and rocky locations that the population of sea otters are stable, and they can access easily to Alaskan coast to kill and eat sea otters, and it is the reason of declining in population of sea otters.
