The article states that there are three ways help to prevent the infection of the oak trees which infected by the P. ramorum fungus, and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor claims that the three methods have a serious limitation and unconvincing, and he refutes each of the author reasons.
First, the reading asserts that prevent the spreading of the spores will be an effective way by encouraging people to clean up their shoes and bike. The professor counters this point by saying that the cleaning shoes has a little effect, not a huge impact for the prevention. In fact, the study shows that there is another cause for spreading of the spore which is the rainfall. The rainfall washed out the water to the stream which helps to spread the spore to the long distance which will be more difficult to control.
Second, the author points out that using fungicidal chemicals helps to protect the oak trees. The lecture contradicts this idea by telling that this strategy needs to inject the chemicals directly and the process has to be repeated every few months. Indeed, inject every single tree in the forest every few months is expensive and impractical.
Third, the reading explains that the clear-cutting method helps to protect the oak tree by cutting and burning the infected trees and surrounding trees. However, the professor posits that cutting surrounding healthy trees will sacrifice the trees. Moreover, there are some trees in the United State are rare, and not easy to come back after cutting them. Therefore, this strategy will damage the ecology.
