Both the reading and the lecture discuss the hypothesis that a kind of dinosaurs, edmontosaur, living in the Alaska's North Slope would migrate to temperate zones in winter. The reading material offers three reasons to support the hypothesis. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article.
To begin with, the author of the article points out that Edmontosaurs only feed on plants, which means that they must leave for food in harsh winter. Nonetheless, the points is challenged by the professor, and she says that Edmontosaurs don't need to migrate for food. To clarify that, one hundred millions ago, earth was much warmer than today, and the daylight was sufficient, so there were a variety of vegetable at that time. Therefore, the dinosaurs living in North Slope could eat nutritious vegetation in winter for sure.
Second, the reading states that many edmontosaur skeletons have been found from the same site, which means they lived together and migratory animal always live together. Conversely, the professor argue that just because those dinosaurs lived in herd doesn't mean they are migratory animals. Sometimes they lived in herd for extra protection from predators. For instance, a kind of elk habitating in the US live in herd, but they are not migratory animals. Thus, this theory is not plausible at all.
Last, the passage contends that edmonsaurs were physically able to migrate long distances. Nevertheless, the scholar disagrees with idea, and she maintains that adult dinosaurs could run fast, but young dinosaurs were not capable of moving swiftly to the destination. Young dinosaurs would not survive if they could only walk on their own. Therefore, this reason is totally unconvincing.
The professor successfully casts doubt on all of the claim presented in the article.
