The reading and the speaker discussing about earlier animal size and the factor which contributed to them but in vary contrast ways. The lecturer refutes the all the points made in passage with some evidences.
First, the passage claims that the huge amount of oxygen presented in the past is one reason why the animals are so larger than today because higher the oxygen mean more growth stimulation occurs in the body. That is reason earlier animals are huge and diverse. But, the professor refuses this point by saying that, in the past there were more volcanic activities and there was no chance of getting more oxygen for animal. Further, they might have suffered with breathlessness.
Secondly, the reading suggests that it might have got the plenty of food supply in order grow in larger size. The reason for this idea is, in the past the availability of nutrition was high enough to stimulate growth as well able to next generations. That way it could be became large animals. Again, the lecturer opposes this point by stating that the research reports from the old fossils shows that there were scare in the nutrients. So, it highly impossible for the animal to get rich amount of nutrients in the past.
Thirdly, the passage states that due earth's early climate favour these animals to become larger in size because warmer the climate indicate that, they need not spent their entire energy to keep their body to stay warm. They might have used this energy to be big animals. Still, the speaker rebuts this view by explaining that most of the smaller animals are staying in warmer area of the earth and the loses energy to keep themselves cool-that require lots of energy. So, it does not make any sense- the warmer means more growth.
To sum up, the reading suggests that animal larger in size due to the plenty of oxygen, food and warm climate. But, the speakers refutes all these statements with research evidences and fossil records obtained from the old fossils.
