The reading passage gives three pieces of evidence which claims that dinosaurs are endotherms like fossils are found in the polar region, leg movement and Haversian canals. However, the professor refutes all the three claims by giving the following three reasons.
Firstly, the passage claims that the fossils of dinosaurs are found in polar regions which implies that they are able to control their body temperature and hence they lived in polar regions. However, the professor disagrees. She says that back then when the dinosaurs lived in polar regions, the temperature of the region is warmer than now and hence the dinosaurs were able to sustain and not because of their control over body temperature which is the characteristic of endotherms. She also says that dinosaurs would probably hibernate or migrate to warmer regions when the temperarute\ of polar region drops.
Secondly, the reading passage states that the endotherms show physical activity like running. The dinosaurs were able to run because their legs are present underneath their body just like modern endotherms. Thus it claims that dinosaurs are endotherms. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that dinosaurs have high energy due to their position of legs. Furthermore, she explained that dinosaurs can grow to a very large size and have more weight. Thus she contradicts the claim that by running, dinosaurs cannot be defined as endotherms.
Thirdly, the passage states that Haversian canals in bones are indicators of endotherms. These canals also help the animal to grow rapidly. The presence of these canals in the dinosaurs is evidence that the dinosaurs are endotherms. But the professor opposes this point. She says that dinosaurs do have Haversian canals. But they have growth rings and the thickening of bones would happen if the growth is slow or stopped. This cycle of growing rapidly followed by growth halt or slower is not a characteristic of endotherms as most of these grow rapidly without a change in progress.
In this way, the professor refutes the reading claims by saying that polar regions were warmer, the position of legs and leg movement not a characteristic of endotherms and due to rapid and slow growth cycles in dinosaurs.
