In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities
The reading provides a statement that employees in individual companies if given a four-day work week can benefit the company. But, the lecturer suggests otherwise and refutes all three of the reading's reasons.
Firstly, the reading claims that better-rested employees will be more alert and as a result cause less costly errors in their work, hence get better performance at the same money. The lecturer, however, suggests that this arrangement might require companies to spend a lot more in various other ways. He emphasizes and points out that the new employees recruited into the company to work in for the lack of the existing employees will require training and other benefits such as medical insurance that will cost the company more. He also posits that medical bills are the same regardless if the employee accepts lesser payment for their work. The company will also need more office space and equipment such as computers for these employees incurring in more costs than expected previously.
Secondly, the article claims that the suggested proposal if applied can reduce unemployment rates as there will be one new employee recruited for four employees taking a four-day employment in lesser payments. However, the lecturer in the lecture argues against it saying that the reason does not follow a logical explanation. He then lists some doubts such as the company might have to introduce overtime facilities and thus maintaining the same or more times of hours of employment for employees. Also, they might expect employees rested from four-day work week to be able to more productive meaning they deliver the same amount of work discarding any need for new employees.
Finally, the article emphasized the improvement of the quality of life for employees as a result of a four-day workweek. But, lecturer in the lecturer goes against this reason saying that this might just risk reduction of the quality of life for the employees. He supports his claim by saying that this arrangement will make the employees vulnerable to job instability in the recession periods they may be the first to cut off from the job if the need arises. Additionally, they may be left out from opportunities provided to full week employees as many management positions require employees to be present in the workplace on a daily basis.
