The reading passage states that there are three possible solutions to prevent bird’s injury due to colliding the glass windows. In contrary, the lecturer refutes the points and supports his own reasons.
First, the passage claims that one-way glass is a proper solution for preventing birds from hitting windows. While, the professor explains that one-way glass acts as a mirror and reflects the environment. It means that a reflection of tree or sky in the glass will seem like a real tree or sky for a bird. Therefore, a bird flying toward it will not understand the difference and will fly right into it which will cause injury to the bird.
Second, the author states that using of colorful designs on the windows can be a good solution for reduction of the damages to birds. Conversely, the lecturer opposes that by illustrating that birds will perceive openings of the designs as holes which convince the birds to fly through them which causes injuries. Also, if they would make extremely small openings then the inside of the building will be too dark which will not be comfortable for the people inside.
Third, the text posits that creating an artificial magnetic field would be a great alternative to solve the problem. However, the speaker refutes it by demonstrating that birds use the magnetic capability only when they migrate in a long distance. For example, when it flies from a cold country to warm country before winter time, it uses its internal magnetic compass. Since the compass does not work for short distance then birds cannot take the benefits in this situation. Furthermore, he adds that in short distance, birds use their eyes and brightness which means the field will not affect them.
