TPO-42 - Integrated Writing Task

Each year, millions of birds get injured by trying to fly through windows. Here, three solutions have been proposed to stop this in the passage. But whether these solutions are sufficiently effective or not is investigated in the lecture. In fact all solution are considered ineffective by the lecturer.

Firstly, using one-way glass does not seem to be effective. As stated in the lecture, light reflects in one-way glass and from the other side it just resembles a mirror. The problem is that birds don't understand mirrors. Therefore, they will try to go through it when they decide to. To the contrary, it is stated in the passage that birds will assume that as a solid barrier just because they don't see inside. So, whether using on-way glass is effective or not, depends crucially on birds' understanding of a mirror.

Secondly, making colorful designs has been suggested as a solution in the context due to its difference from glass but, as considered in the lecture, colorful designs do not cover the whole surface of glass therefore the uncolored spaces are just as transparent as glass. Then, from a bird's point of view, these spaces are holes through which they can fly. This opposites the goal of making colorful designs and therefore leaves this out due its inefficiency.

Thirdly, the text considers magnetic fields as another solution. Actually use of magnetic fields for short trips contradicts the fact that birds make use of magnetic fields only when they are traveling long distances. So this solution does not seem to have much effect.

Finally, as stated in the lecture, none of the three solutions suggested in the passage are useful to stop birds from flying through glasses.
