The reading and the listening passages are both about the mass-extension that happened at the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago. The author of the reading passage provides three theories that explain the extension of species. The professor casts doubt on all of three theories.
The writer mentions that the mass-extension is because of the decline of sea levels. Also, it is mentioned that at the end of the Triassic period there was fluctuation in the level of the sea. Thus, the population that lived during the Triassic period were destroyed. The professor, on the other hand, explains that it is true that there was fluctuation on the sea but the fall in seawater was gradual. It needed millions of years to change. The fall on water must be dramatically in order to destroy lives.
In addition, the article states that at the end of the Triassic period there were massive climate cooling because of releasing of sulfur dioxide from volcanic activity. It is mentioned that this lowered the global temperature which led to devastated of many species. The lecturer, however, contends that it is true that sulfur dioxide lower the temperature but it was for a short period. Furthermore, she says that the So4 stays on the atmosphere and then combined with water and then fall with rain. Therefore, it is not likely that this theory is true.
Finally, the reading passage adds that when asteroids hit the earth surface it creates crater which blocks sunlight. This leads animals to die. The professor rebuts this point. She says that a few scientists believe the theory. Also, she adds that there was no data show that there was crater within the period of Triassic. However, there was one that was 12 million year before the period.
All in all, the professor debunks all the three theories.
