TPO 1, Integrated Writing
In the reading section, the author contends that four-day work week would benefit the country as a whole, companies, and individuals who decided to take the option. However, in the listening part, the professor holds a totally different view.
In the first place, the writer makes the point that working four-day a week would increase company profits. that is because, employees make fewer severe mistakes and hiring new workers would not result in additional payroll costs. In contrast, the lecturer rejects this notion by stating that shortened work week will force companies to spend more. Adding new workers mean putting more money on training and medical benefits. besides, new employees need office space and computers which decrease the company profits.
What's more, on the contrary to the idea in the reading suggesting that the option of four-day workweek would be better for the whole economy because it would reduce the rate of unemployment. the professor argues that hiring new workers is costly and companies have other options. they might choose to ask their employees to work over time to make up difference. Worse, they might raise their expectations and believe that four-day employees can do the same amount of the work they used to do in five days. If this happens, then no additional jobs will be created and current jobs will become unpleasant.
finally, even though the writer of the passage indicates that shortened workweek would be better for individual employees for offering them more leisure time to spend with their family and improve their life quality, the lecturer suggests that working four-day a week presents risks for employees and will decrease the quality of their lives. that is because four-day workers are more likely to lose their job during an economic downturn. In addition, companies prefer to choose five-days employees in management positions to ensure a consistent supervision.
