Mock Test 03
The reading and listening materials have a debate on what the short-faced bear whose body size was massive ate to survive. The writer comes up with three theories, which are contradicted by the following lecture.
Firstly, the writer claims that the bear might eat giant mammals such as buffalo and mammoths. However, the speaker casts doubt on it by saying that the short-faced bears were not able to attack the giant mammals. The skeleton of short-faced bear shows that it had unusually thin bones, which means its front legs and paws were too weak to pull the mammals down.
Secondly, the author argues that fast-running animals could be a food of the bear due to its ability to run at high-speed, while the lecture views this issue from an opposite angle. According to the professor, instead of running in straight line, the animals like deer often took a sharp turn to change the direction. Thus, it was difficult for the short-faced bear to chase them up since it was too heavy to make a sharp turn without slowing down.
Thirdly, the passage states that the bear was a scavenger that fed on animals already killed by other predators. By contrast, in accordance with the professor, this claim does not hold water. It is because a scavenger usually eats hard bones that partly eaten by other animals, consequently leaving distinct marks on its teeth when chewing bones. However, there are no such kind of marks on short-faced bear’s teeth, which indicates that the short-faced bear was not a scavenger.
To sum up, the professor totally refutes the author’s statements, and more conceivable theories are needed to point out the food resources of short-faced bear.
