The chart below depicts the proportion of earnings variation between the ladies and gents for a period of 40 years.
Broadly, the gap is the maximum in Japan and the least in France. With both the countries showing a favourable trend for women as there is a narrowing trend that is noted.
While the difference between the earnings is at the rate of fifty percent in Japan in 1978, this fell down to forty percent in 2008. An excellent example of the snail like progress in the concept of equal pay. Even developed and powerful economies like US and UK have failed to plug this inequality. Yet, there has been little improvement. The disparity has fallen from approximately thirty percent by around five percent.
Oddly enough, France with all its quirks has consistently been the torch bearer of equal pay, the difference in wage rates was merely twenty percent in the seventies and it has fallen to be roughly fifteen percent. Though, there is some progress and a considerably slow pace, the real cause for concern is Australia. This country that was historically inclined towards minimal income gap between the sexes, has since an upward movement favoring unequal pay from 1998 to 2008.What was initially lesser than twenty percent is now rising to thirty percent, indicating a worsening workplace for women.
