While Jane Austin is one of the most popular among all English novelists, her real appearance is still a mystery. However, recently a professionally painted portrait of a teenage girl with full-length size was thought to figure out the mystery. There are some reasonable answers to convince the public, but from the lecture we know that the reasons are not at all evidencing. Instead, they leave many questions.
Primarily, in 1882 Austen’s family has endorsed the claim that the teenage girl is Austen with no doubts. Although the words coming from Austen’s family can be authoritative, in the year 1882, Austen has been dead for almost 70 years. Thus, we can infer that Austen’s family at that time didn’t really see Austen herself. So only by a picture, they may also have problems recognizing Austen.
Second, the Austen family is really large. So, the appearance of the teenage girl can not only resemble Austen, but also can resemble Austen’s sisters. And among all her siblings, Mary is believed to be the one who can also be the subject of the portrait.
Third, we can not attribute this portrait to Ozias Humphrey only due to the similar style. Actually, we can learn from the canvas where the portrait is depicted that the paper was from a man called William. However, William only sold the canvases when Austen is 27 years old instead of a teenage girl.
So according to all the above reason, we can draw a conclusion as to whether Austen is the subject of this portrait is still a question.
