The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding
The two pictures illustrate the way that residences can be protected in regions which are susceptible to flooding.
Generally speaking, there are two different methods to prevent floods from damaging houses, one of which involves a stopbank while the other one does not. However, in either case, the house is constructed high above the water level.
Regarding usage of a stopbank, it is built with a peak higher than the flood level recorded within 100 years recently to ensure that water cannot submerge shelters. There is a floodgate and a berm, which allow water to flow from internal runoff, through the stopbank, towards the river being below the ground level. The building is only need constructing so that it is above the internal ponding surface.
Moving onto the second method, which is no stopbank used, the building is raised higher, compared to the first case by far, upper the 100-year flood level, still by a determined distance of 300mm freeboard, as there is no deterrent to water overflow.
