In North America, 5% of land was degraded, among which 0.2% was degraded by deforestation, 3.3% by over cultivation and 1.5% by over grazing. Whereas in Europe,9.8% of land was degraded by deforestation, 7.7% by over cultivation and 5.5% by over grazing which accounted for 23% of total land. On the other hand, in Oceania regions, 1.7% of land was degraded by cutting down of trees, 11.3% by excessive grazing but no land was degraded by over cultivation.
Taking into account causes of worldwide land degradation in 1990, most of the land was degraded by excessive grazing which accounts for 35% of total land degradation. 30% of land was degraded by over cultivation, 28% of land was degraded by deforestation and 7% land was degraded by other various causes.
To sum up, most of the land were degraded by over grazing worldwide and in Oceania areas. Whereas in Europe, main reason of land degradation was deforestation and in North America was over cultivation.
