The article and the lecture are both about the decline in the population of the sea otter, a small mammal living in waters along western coast of North America. The author supports the enviromental pollution hypothesis as being responsible for decrease in the sea otter population and gives three reasons. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees with the enviromental pollution theory and believes that the attack by predators is the main reason for the decline of the sea otter population.
Firstly, the author mentions that water samples have revealed high levels of pollutant chemicals which have reduced sea otter resisitance to fight with infections and causing sea otter population decline. The lecturer contradicts this statement by explaining that no dead bodies have been found on beaches which can prove that sea otter mammals are dying due to infection, instead finding no dead bodies is more consistent with the theory of attacks by predators who eat sea otter mammals bodies.
Secondly, the author explains that because of pollution, many other mammals such as seals and sea lions are decreasing in numbers and the widely occuring predator, Orca, prefer whales over these sea mammals. So, the author believes that Orca could not be the reason for the decrease in population of these small mammals. The lecture counters this statement by mentioning that whales have disappeared from these waters due to increased hunting by humans and as a result, Orca has started hunting these small mammals as they have no other option to survive.
Thirdly, the author claims that ocean currents or other enviromental factors lead to uneven distribution of pollution in different areas of water and thus, causing uneven distribution of otter population. The lecture challenges this argument and explains that uneven distribution of otter population is better explained by predator theory as otter population is less in areas which are more accessible for the predators. He, furthre, adds that as Orca have less access to rocky and shallow area, the otter population is more in these areas.
In conclusion, the lecturer effectively casts doubt on all the claims made in the article and supports the predator theory for decline in sea otter population.
