The two charts show the popularity of two different means of public transportation in connection with the population density in three big cities namely London, New York City and Tokyo in the year 2009.
It is clear that citizens living in two cities with the highest and lowest population density (Tokyo and New York City) mostly preferred subway to bus. The opposite was true for London, in which bus was far more popular than subway.
In 2009, Tokyo, the city had the highest population density among 3 mentioned cities, at nearly 6000 people/square kilometer, also witnessed the highest percentage of subway commuters (33.3%). Similarly, New York City’s residents preferred subway to bus, 28.6% of total city population commuted by subway, whereas only 12% of them chose bus. Meanwhile, London, the second highest population density city (around 5000 people/square kilometer), saw a doubled number of people travelling by bus in comparison to 19% for subway ridership.
