The reading and the lecture are both about the decline in the reading habits of people, especially for literature. The reading claims that less reading habits can cause negative effects and provide three reasons of support. However, the lecture casts doubt on the claims and refutes each of author's reasons.
First, the reading states that only literature can provide intellectual stimulation for imagination. This point is challenged in the lecture by saying that stimulation can also be happened by science, history and political reading. They have the same high quality as literature. Besides that, one cannot assume less reading on literature means less reading at all.
Second, the reading points out that people read self-help books instead of literature and they are the best sellers now which the author of the reading finds them super artificial and unintellectual. Moreover, the reading claims that instead of reading, people listen to music and watch TV. The lecture opposes this idea by explaining that the culture has changed, and people can gain more information not only from written literature. Today people have more opportunities such as TV and music, and they do not waste their time with them.
Third, in the reading, it is said that talented writers are forced to write less because there are not enough reader for them. That makes publishers to invest less money for literature. The lecture rebuts this idea and suggests that writers are intent to be difficult to be understood by readers. That is not on readers actually. It is all about writers.
Finally, all the claims provided in the reading are challenged by specific explanation in the lecture.
