The table compares 6 continents in terms of the forest area in three years 1990, 2000 and 2005.
Overall, there was a forested land expansion in European and Asian countries while African, North American, Oceanian and South American ones underwent a reduction.
Europe had the largest area of forest, increasing exponentially from 989 million ha in 1990 to over 1 billion ha in 2005. Starting at 576 million ha in 1990, the forest land in Asian dropped considerably in 2000 but soared to 584 million ha in 2005.
A similar pattern was not reflected in other regions. Despite having the second largest area during 15 years, South American suffered the most severe loss in forest land, plummeting by 64 million ha. A nearly similar decrease was observed in Africa, from 749m ha in 1990 to 691m ha in 2005. By comparison, America ranked fourth in 1990 but outstripped Africa afterward since its forest area went down insignificantly and leveled off at 705 million hectares after 2000. Only 2 million hectares was lost in Oceania, whose forest land was also the smallest.
