The table illustrates the changes of areas of forest in six regions in a 15-year period.
Overall, it could be seen that the forest area in most places shrank, aside for in Europe and Asia. Also, it is noticeable that the forested land in Oceania was significantly smaller than in other parts of the world.
Looking at the table in detail reveals that South America saw a reduction in its area of forest, dropping from 946 to 882 million hectares after 15 years. Similarly, there was a decline of almost 50 million hectares in the forested land in Africa. In comparison, the drop in North America was less pronounced, by only 3 million hectares in the first ten years before levelling off at 705 million hectares while Oceania dropped consistently from 199 to 197 million hectares after the period.
By contrast, in Europe, the figure rose through the years, having reached over 1 billion hectares by 2005. After a dip to 570 million hectares between 1990 and 2000, Asia gained 14 million more hectares by the end of examined period.
