TOEFL TPO 09- Integrated Writing Task
The passage discusses automobile's main source of power and says that there is a promising replacement for internal-combustion engine. The promising alternative is the hydrogen-based fuel-cell. The passage provides three reasons for supporting its idea. However, the professor describes that hydrogen fuel cell is not a practical solution to solve the polution problem. So, the passage refutes all the passage's reasons by three reasons.
First, the reading claims that internal-combustion engines are relied on petroleum. There is a catastrophic problem about petroleum base fuels. Petroleum is a limited source and one day it will be finished. While the talk asserts that providing pure hydrogen for manufacturing hydrogen-based fuel is not an easy process and it needs a lot of advanced equipments such as a device that produce cold temperature. Also, fabricating these complex equipment is somewhat impractical.
Second, the text contends that hydrogen-based fuels are very attractive because it seems they can solve world's pollution problem. However, the lecture rejects this idea by explaining that manufacturing pure hydrogen increase the pollution because the purification procedures need to burn a lot of petroleum fuel. As yo can see, the hydrogen-based fuels are not very environment friendly.
Third the passage suggests that fuel-cell engines will be replaced by ancient engines because they are cost effective in comparison with the old ones. But, the professor rebutes this idea by describing that hydrogen-based fuels need to materials loke Pt and this material is very expensive. So, the cost effectiveness of hydrogen-based fuel engines is a elusion! As a result, the text's idea is not correct.
