Torreya in Florida becoming an extinct
The reading and the lecture are both about Torreya tree which is common in the state of Florida, and its population will extinct soon. The author of the reading passage gives three ways to save the Torreya trees. The lecturer effectively casts doubt on the points made in the reading. He says that these solutions are not satisfactory.
First of all, the author states that reestablish the trees in the same location in which they thrived for several years in the Northern part of Florida. They have a cooler climate than the surrounding area, scientists have been working over there. The lecturer refutes this point and asserts that A microclimate easily affected by the climate changes. Additionally, land of the Florida draining and global warming is affecting the land. Therefore, the land will become relatively drier, so this is not an appropriate option.
Secondly, the author states that to move them to a different area in further north. Humans would simply move it in a cool environment. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that humans have tried to move other trees over different areas. That new trees had killed the other trees in the new area, and after that, the native trees became extinct. so, the new experiment could bring unpredictable results.
Finally, the author mentions that the seeds and saplings can be moved in a closely monitored environment in research centers. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that research centers have not capacity to keep a large population of these trees. Their population is very large and diverse.
