The charts show that figures for developing and industrialized countries have increased from 1980 to 1990, apart from the indicator of spending on research and development for developing countries. Overall, industrialized countries experienced more dramatic growth in the number of scientists and technicians per thousand people and in the average length of schooling years.
The number of years dedicated to schooling increased by almost 2 years in industrialized countries, whereas developing countries experienced an increase of less than a year over the period from 1980 to 1990. This period also saw a dramatic increase in the number of scientists and technicians per thousand people in both types of countries. While the number for industrialized countries rose from about 42 to 70, the number for developing countries rose from 10 to 18. In contrast to all indicators, however, spending on research and development decreased in developing countries during the decade. Nevertheless, industrialized countries' spending more than doubled over the decade.
