The speaker disputes the author's suggestive claims that Chevalier memoir about his life's adventures were not accurate. She provides several reasons to cast doubt about the author's claims.
First, according to the text Chevalier was not a rich person person because he borrowed money from a wealthy merchant to cover his debts. However, the lecturer find this idea debatable. She indeed believes that Chevalier was not poor. The lecturer contends that Chevalier had lots of properties. However, he had to borrow some money temporarily before he cash the money from the selling transactions.
Second, the lecturer contradict the fallacy of the passage that since the memoir were written several years after the conversation between Chevalier and Voltaire, it is very hard for Chevalier to remember the details of the conversation and write it down. However, the lecturer finds indeed that the information in the memoir is accurate. According the lecturer Chevalier was always taking notes of the conversation that took place with Voltaire. Thus the information is most likely to be accurate.
Finally, the author argues the Chevalier did not escape from prison as the memoir mentioned. She believes that Chevalier had some contact with politicians who helped him to be released. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that in fact Chevalier did escape from the prison. She contends that other prisoners had contact with politicians yet, they were not able to escape. Moreover, the prison's guards found a hole in the ceiling right after Chevalier escape. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that Chevalier was released because of the influence of his politician's friends.
