In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States—birds in particular.
The reading passage suggests that the decline in the population of birds would be more and more serious in the future as the increase of agriculture and pesticide usage. The lecture speaker, however, holds different opinions counter the passage.
First of all, according to the passage, the expansion of human population and settlements would always harm the habitats of birds. On the other hand, the speaker argues that although the expansion of human did remove some of the habitats, it actually creates new habitats for birds. There are many birds whose habitat is in the urban area. Instead of decreasing, the bird population in cities are actually increasing.
Moreover, the passage states that the wilderness areas for bird habitats would continue to decline due to the growth of agriculture. In contrast, the lecture speaker claims that by the progress of agriculture, the production rate of crops now is more productive than before. Therefore, farmers would not need additional land to grow more crops.
Finally, the lecture gives another statement that more and more people are aware of the decline of birds population now. The chemical pesticides that are used nowadays are more environment-friendly than before. And the genetically modified crops, which are resistant to insects by themselves, are introduced in agriculture, consequently, pesticides are no longer needed to protect the crops.
