TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g
The passage discusses that by using genetic modification and changing the charasteristics of trees they can create productive trees. In this way, trees produce more fruit, grow faster, and resist in hard conditions. The reading provides three benefits for genetic modification. In contrast, the professor states there are problems in this method. As a result, she rejects all these three benefits.
First, the passage claims that genetically modified trees are hardier tan natural trees. So, they can survive more in catastrophic situations compared to natural trees. In spite of this idea, the professor describes that always there is a possibility that a certain condition like climate change, emerging new pests and insects cause damage in genetically modified trees because these trees are not resistant to all different factors and conditions. Thus, their survival is not practical.
Second, the article asserts by using genetically modified trees they can have more economically benefits. If they change trees genetically ttees will grow faster and will give greater yeild of trees. However, the professor rejects this idea by stating that there are some hidden costs that farmers should pay. For example, everytime they cultivate their products and they want plant again, they have to pay to responsible companies that provide genetically modified seeds. As you can see, these cost can be too much for farmers.
Third, the reading contends the use of genetically modified trees can prevent over exploitation of wild trees. While the professor says that most of the time natural trees have to compete with genetically modified trees in abtaining water, nutrients and even sun light. Genetically modified trees designed to absorb nutrients and water quickly in comparison with natural trees. In this way, they can grow fast and they can consum most of the resources. As a result, natural trees cannot survive. This event can be effective in companies situations and their demand for wood.
