Dear Alex,
I hope you are well, I am writing this letter to you to inform that I will not be able to attend the play on this Saturday night. I understand I persuaded you to watch this play with me and I have also purchased two tickets in advance for me and you, however, I just received a telephone call from my manager and he requested me if I can cover the evening shift on this Saturday. Unfortunately, no one is available to work on that day so he insisted me and I could not say no to him since he heavily relies on me and trusts me. Also, if I can display a great extent of diligence then my promotion is inevitable, as you know I have been waiting for it for a quite long time.
However, my cousin Anne is in town and interested in seeing the play on Saturday so she can join you if it is alright with you. I can also send the tickets along with her so you do not have to worry about picking them up. Otherwise, I can request the theater manager to cancel and refund the money.
Please let me know your thoughts about it. In the future, I will make sure this does not happen again. Please accept my sincere apologies.
Yours sincerely
Dave
