Summarize the point made in the lecture and explain how the speaker cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
Task 1
Both the article and the lecture talk about the decline in the population of sea otters which are a small mammal that lives in the waters along North America's west coast to Alaska. According to the article, the main cause of this decline is environmental pollution. However, the lecturer can't disagree more.
First of all, the article says that pollution is the most likely cause for the population decline of the sea otter because of the pollution sources along the Alaskan coast such as oil rigs. It elaborates more by saying that even the water samples in that area showed increased levels of chemicals that could lead to the deteriorate the immune system of the otters hence their death. On the other hand, the lecturer articulates that according to the investigation done, it was found that predation was the reason behind this decline. He supports this point by saying that the lack of sea otters in that area was not expected.
Moreover, the article hints that the decline of other sea mammals such as seals also shows that the culprit is pollution. It continues by saying that whatever was affecting the sea otters was affecting other sea mammals too. Albeit, the lecturer says the reason why other sea mammals like whales are disappearing is due to human hunting of those species. He elaborates more by articulating that as there were no whales to feed on sea alkers, they ended up feeding on otters which were the ones available, hence the decline of sea otters.
Finally, the article articulates that there is also an uneven pattern of otter decline because in some Alaskan locations due to ocean currents which may have created uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast. However, the lecturer contradicts this by saying that the reason why there is an uneven number of sea otters in some locations is because some parts are favorable for sea alkers, others not. This means that in parts where the alkers are in stable number, the number of otters is uneven as they feed on the sea otters.
