The reading and the lecture are both about that a recent portrait of a teenage girl is for Jane Austen, who is a famous novelist. One of her family members offers this portrait for the sale. The author of the reading believes that there are three possible pieces of evidence that the girl in the portrait is Austen. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges the statement made by the author. He is of the opinion that the paint could not be a portrait of Jane Austen.
First, the writer claims that her family, in 1882, recognized the girl on the portrait is the author and used the portrait as an illustration in her letters version. the lecturer, however, cast doubts on this fact. He states that these family members did not see Austin, because at this time Austen was dead over seventy years and they are loosely connected with her.
Second, the author of the reading adds that face in the recent portrait is almost similar to another portrait which is drawn by Austen's sister. The lecturer says the Austen family is very large, consequently, the face in the recent painting might be for one of Austen's relatives. It is mentioned that many experts have proven the girl in the recent portrait is on of Ausen's niece.
Finally, the article notes that there are links between the portrait and Ozias Humphrey who is a society portrait painter. The style of the portrait looks like Humphrey's style and her active career was when Austen is a teenager. On the other hand, the lecturer rebuts this by asserting that the style could not be a strong proof. He elaborates on this by mentioning that there is a stamp on the back of canvanses of the portrait whos sold when Austin at 27 years old.
