The recycling rate have been increasing for materials except for papers and cardboards, whose percentage of recycling shows a downward trend.
Plastics and aluminium cans were recycling with an increasing rate from the time it has started, with aluminium cans having a sharp rise in the rate. The change in the rate of recycling of plastics is very low.
The rate of recycling of glass containers declined by 10% in a span of 8 years, from 1978, which was retained by 1990. However, this rise continued after that and about 60% of glass containers are being recycled by 2010.
The rate of recycling of papers and cardboards had showed a fluctuating nature in earlier days and started showing a steady change after 1990. If the percentage of papers and cardboards being recycled was 65% in 1978 it could become only 70% by 2010, even though there was peak of 80% in 1990. Still the rate of recycling have always been higher for papers and cardboards in comparison with other materials.
