The pie charts below show units of electricity production by fuel source in Australia and France in 1980 and 2000.
The charts compare the units of electricity produced in different ways in Australia and France in the year of 1980 and 2000.
Coal was the main sources of electricity in Australia in both years, creating 50 units and 130 units respectively, while in France, the amount of electricity produced by this kind of fuel was just half of that of Australia in 1980 and remained unchanged during the two decades. Most of the electricity in France came from nuclear power, which more than doubled from 25 units in 1980 to 126 units in 2000. In contrast, Australia did not produce electricity in this way.
Hydropower was the second most important fuel source in Australia in 2000, which produced one-fifth of the total amount of electricity (36 units), rising from 20 units in 1980. In France, however, it was much more trivial, generating a mere of 5 units and 2 units in 1980 and 2000 respectively. The figures for natural gas have shown a similar pattern in both countries, falling from 20 units to 2 units in Australia and from 25 units to 2 units in France. On the contrary, oil gained more importance in France, with the amount rising from 20 units to 25 units from 1980 to 2000, while falling sharply from 10 units to 2 units in Australia.
Overall, coal produced the largest amount of electricity in Australia while nuclear power was its counterpart in France, which did not even exist in Australia.
