The chart below shows information about changes in average house prices in five different cities between 1990 and 2002 compared with the average house prices in 1989.
The bar chart compares five major cities in terms of the changes in the cost of an average house over a period of 13 years.
The average house prices in London between 1990 and 1995 were significantly lower than that in 1989 (7%), which was the largest decrease in these five cities. However, a dramatic increase was seen from 1996 to 2002, with an around 11% increase from the average prices in 1989. The figure for New York showed a similar pattern, declining 5% during the first period and then rising 5% during the second one.
Tokyo was the only country that experienced a continued decrease in house prices, dropping 7% and 5% in the two periods respectively.
The costs of an average house in both Madrid and Frankfurt climbed before the year 1996, 1% and 2% respectively. While the prices in Madrid increased even more over the six years after 1995, the growth in that of Frankfurt slowed to approximately 1%.
Overall, the property prices in London and New York were volatile during this 13-year period, in contrast to the consistently rising prices in Madrid and Frankfurt. Tokyo’s houses were increasingly affordable.
